He is incredibly witty and humorous, and I enjoyed reading each of his interactions with Sammerin and Tisaanah. The other main character, Max, is a wonderfully refreshing male lead. You can't help but relate to her and her desire to be more/do more. She is flawed, she is insecure at times, and she is human. She's not the traditional fantasy heroine, swinging in with mindless snark and shallow motivations. Most notably of all, Tisaanah is a young woman who, from a young age, was sold into slavery, abused in the worst ways, and still decides to make something of herself. However, I checked this book out on a whim because I saw an advertisement for it on social media, and I was not disappointed.Įverything from the character development to the unique magic system to the incredibly nuanced characters/relationships makes this beautiful book a treat from start to finish. I am VERY picky when it comes to fantasy books. I did not think I would love and treasure this book as much as I do. This book was an unexpected 5 star read for me.
