My Thoughts on Small Spaces by Katherine Arden When Netgalley did a 24 hour free giveaway, I snagged a copy immediately! But of course, things got a little crazy and I just never got around to it. Small Spaces by Katherine Arden is a super creepy tale filled with terrifyingly thick mist, scarecrows that come alive, and a haunting family history. ![]() ![]() ![]() And I would have wandered the world in search of you, even if I didn’t know who I was looking for.” ―Nicholas Sparksĥ0. ![]() “If we’d never met, I think I would have known my life wasn’t complete. Here's W Cooman, another skeptic from the comment section. In the real world these Auto-tractors would have to face a variety of ever-changing field conditions, but I'm certain John Deere has been testing for years before bringing them to the market. But city driving in the winter? Well, that's a challenge. Here in North Dakota, I can say that Interstate 94 would be the easiest test track for an automated car. Like autonomous cars, there's skepticism about adapting to real-world conditions. But a shortage of labor for many operations is a very real issue as well. ![]() I've never farmed a day in my life so it was a bit of a surprise to read about how the hands-on aspect of the work is so central to the passion of producers. ![]() That was actually a pretty common theme to many of the comments left on the site. The book also purports to explore the friendship between man and dog, but without giving away any spoilers, I thought the dynamic between Scraggly and her owner was too fraught and slight to make this claim, or for the ending to feel earned. After all, within this kind of context, I can deal with fictional animals being able to narrate their inner thoughts and feelings, but full-blown inter-species conversations and dogs “bursting into tears” requires greater suspension of disbelief than I can muster. This emotionally manipulative approach coupled with the animal characters being personified a little too much stopped me from being able to submit myself to the narrative. The setup alone threatens to be twee, but I also found it too relentless in its sorrow for Scraggly’s suffering to really hit home. ![]() I can see why lots of people love this, as it’s easy to sympathise with a scrappy runt determined to overcome the odds, but it’s presented in a style that I struggled to click with, unfortunately. from the Korean by Chi-Young Kimįollowing a dog named Scraggly and the various hardships she must endure in her attempt to live a happy life, this reads very much like a fable about perseverance in the face of difficult times. ![]() The Dog Who Dared to Dream by Sun-mi Hwang, tr. ![]() |
